Poliwag is the mascot of Poliwager, so it makes sense to have a page completely about Poliwag!
Poliwag, the Tadpole Pokémon. Poliwag is a Water-type Pokémon, and it evolves into Poliwhirl at level 25. Poliwhirl then evolves into either Poliwrath with a Water Stone, or Politoed by trading with a King’s Rock.
Red, Blue, and Yellow
Poliwag was introduced in Red and Blue Version. It’s #60 in the Kanto and National Pokédex.
Poliwag can be caught by fishing on Route 22, Viridian City, and Pallet Town in Red and Blue. In Yellow, you can also catch Poliwag on Routes 16, 17, 22, 23, Viridian City, and Fuchsia City.
Poliwrath, a Water/Fighting-type Pokémon, is the only final evolution in Red, Blue and Yellow. Politoed wasn’t introduced until Gold and Silver.
Gold, Silver, and Crystal
Poliwag in Gold and Silver got some new traits. There is now breeding, so Poliwag can either be male or female, and it’s in the Water 1 egg group. Poliwag can be bred or caught shiny as well. Poliwhirl can now evolve into Politoed, a Water-type Pokémon, by trading it with a King’s Rock attached.
Poliwag can be caught in Gold, Silver and Crystal on Routes 6, 22, 28, 30, 31, 35, 43, 44, in the Ruins of Alph, Ilex Forest, Ecruteak City, Violet City, Mt. Silver, Viridian City, and Blackthorn City by fishing.
Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald
Poliwag cannot be caught in Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald; you have to trade it from FireRed or LeafGreen. In Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon got abilities, and Poliwag’s is either Water Absorb or Damp. Water Absorb recovers 25% HP when Poliwag’s hit by a Water type move, and Damp prevents Exploding or Self Destructing in a battle.

You can then breed Poliwags and trade them over to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald if you want.
